The Government of Malta strongly condemns the massacre which took place in the Syrian town of Tremseh. More than 200 men, women and children appear to have been killed in this latest atrocity. It also urgently calls for the UN Monitoring Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) to be allowed to investigate what has happened and establish who is responsible for the attack. These atrocious acts must not occur with impunity.

In light of this situation, Malta calls on the International Community to adopt measures through the United Nations Security Council to bring this 16 month conflict to an end, through the effective application of the peace plan for Syria of the UN Special Envoy and the Arab League.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Tonio Borg said that “Our thoughts are with the Syrian people, and all those who have suffered as a result of this latest atrocity. More than 17,000 people have died already. The time has come for decisive diplomatic action to bring about a peaceful end to the violence. All members of the Security Council must shoulder their responsibility to bring this about.”
