The Hon. Dr Tonio Borg, LL.D., M.P.
Tonio Borg was born on 12th May 1957. He is Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta as well as Deputy Leader of the party currently in government Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) of Christian Democratic inspiration.
He attended the Jesuit –run St Aloysius College and graduated ``cum laude``in law at the University of Malta in 1979 . He practised law at the Courts of Justice between 1980-1995 specialising in human rights cases
His activity in politics started at University where he was active in the Christian Democratic Students organisation (SDM); he also participated in student politics serving as member of the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji.
At the age of 17 he joined the Nationalist Party Youth Movement, occupying several posts within the organisation including that of Secretary General and President. He has been a member of the PN Executive since 1978.
He was elected to Parliament in the interests of the Nationalist Party in 1992 and has been elected in all subsequent general elections(1996, 1998, 2003, 2008). In the last General Election he was elected for the VIII District (B`Kara, Lija, Iklin, Santa Venera) as well the Eleventh (Mosta, Balzan, Attard and Mdina).
In 1995 he was given his first ministerial appointment at the age of 38 and entrusted with home affairs. Following the 1998 election and the return of a Nationalist Government he served again as Home Affairs Minister for ten years (1998-2008) covering in different periods additional portfolios including justice, environment, urban planning and state property management.
In March 2004 he was elected Deputy Leader of the Nationalist Party and soon after was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the House of Representatives.
In March 2008 following the third successive victory of the PN at the election polls he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and again Leader of the House.
Dr. Borg is a lecturer in public law at the University of Malta a post he still holds today. Between 1990 and 1995 he served as member of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT).
He has occupied other posts including that of member of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (1992-1995), Mid Med Bank Director (1987-92), member of the Planning Authority (1992-1995) and Joint Parliamentary Committee between the European and Maltese parliament (1992-1995;1996-98).
Tonio Borg is married to Adele nee` Galea and they have three children together , Daniela, a notary public by profession, and Mark and Adriana who are pursuing their studies at University.
