On 27th November, the Embassy of Malta took part in a Commonwealth event called “The Modern Commonwealth in Pursuit of Development and Democracy” organised by the British Chamber of Commerce Berlin/Brandenburg, the Economic Advisory Board of the CDU Party and the Embassy of Jamaica. Mr. Ransford Smith, Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, based in London, was guest speaker. Besides the business networking aspect of the event, an additional highlight of the evening was an art exhibition consisting of contributions from Commonwealth embassies in Berlin.
The Embassy of Malta mounted a colourful stand, including tourism and investment promotional material, an old map of Malta, a painting by famous Maltese contemporary artist Alfred Chircop, beautiful glassware by Mdina Glass and figurines of the so called ‘fat ladies’ found in the Megalithic temples of Malta.
The event, hosted by the Maritim Hotel Berlin, was very well attended with over 100 participants coming from the business community, diplomatic corps and private entities.
Following the guest address by the Deputy Secretary-General Smith, the British Chamber, on behalf of the organisers, invited Ambassador Grech to deliver an appreciation of the cultural/artistic dimension of the evening
During a reception the guests had the opportunity not only to network, but also to get an impression of the art and cultural treasures of the participating countries. The Malta stand was very well frequented, several enquiries made and a large amount of MTA, Finance Malta, Malta Enterprise and Air Malta brochures distributed.
