The Maltese Consulate in Washington, D.C. provides the following services:

 Opening Hours

The Embassy’s opening hours are:

Monday to Friday 0900hrs – 1700hrs.

The Consulate’s opening hours are:

Monday to Friday from 0930hrs – 1300hrs.

It is advisable to call for an appointment particularly if the Consul’s presence is deemed necessary.

1. Passport Services

All Maltese citizens residing in the United States of America may apply for a new passport or renewal of their passport through the Maltese Consulate without the need to travel to Malta.  

In order to apply for a new passport or renew a passport, applicants must personally submit the following to the Maltese Consulate:

Expired Passport

 The application, duly completed, for a renewed passport, as well as the expired passport, and all the necessary relative documentation, must be handed to the Maltese Consulate. Upon receipt of the renewed passport, the expired passport would be cancelled by the Consulate and, together with the renewed passport, is returned to applicant.   

Passport Application Form

 It is important that all sections in the application form are duly filled in following which the original application form together with all the required relevant documentation should be personally handed in to the Consulate.

 Documents checklist

Valid Maltese I.D. Card or Government issued photograph identity document

·     Recommender’s signature -   Applicable for first time applicants only.

·     Certificate of Registration/Naturalization - The original document.

·     Expired Passport.  Applicable in cases of expiry.

·     Letter from Citizenship and Expatriates Affairs.  Applicable in case of dual citizenship where this has not been acquired by Registration or Naturalization

·     Applicant’s Birth Certificate. Applicable for first time applicants only.

·     Parents’ Birth and Marriage Certificates.  Applicable for first time applicants only.

·     Applicant’s Marriage Certificate.  Applicable only if applicant is married or separated.

·     Spouse’s Birth Certificate and Passport number.  Applicable only if applicant is married or separated.

·     Police Report.  Applicable only in the case of passport theft or loss.

·     Oath for lost or stolen passport.  Applicable only in the case of passport theft or loss.

Passport Sized Photos

Passport sized photos, which must be identical and in colour, should not be more than 6 months old. One of the said photos should be signed by the recommender. Photographs must be in line with ICAO standards (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm).

Each application is subject to an administration fee of $13

Passports for Children

Children can no longer be included in their parent’s passports. They must have their own separate passport. In addition to the requirements described above, the following conditions are applicable when applying for a passport for a minor.

The application for a minor’s passport has to be submitted in person by either one of the parents. The parent calling to submit his son’s/daughter’s application must produce both parent’s Identity documents. Passports for persons under 18 must also be collected by a parent/guardian upon presentation of both parents’/guardians’ Identity documents.

Applications for minors under 18 years of age are not accepted if sent by post and the application will not be processed by the Passport Office. The parent’s/guardian’s consent has to be completed for all applicants under 18 years of age, and the recommender must witness both parents’/guardians’ signatures.

The recommender must also verify the true identity of the parents/guardians before adding his/her countersignature at Section 7. In all cases, the parents’/guardians’ signatures must be countersigned by a recommender at Section 7. The same recommender should also sign Section 8 (and one of the photographs).

The Identification documents of both parents/guardians must also be produced when collecting the passport

 How to effect payment

 Payment of fees may be made in cash or by money order.

 2. Citizenship

Guidance will also be given with respect to requirements and fees payable.  Upon receipt the applications, duly completed and accompanied by the relevant certificates, will be forwarded by the Consulate to the Department for Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs for processing.

3. Residence Schemes

Application fee is $170.00 for all residence scheme applications.

 Applicants must set up a meeting with the Consul to personally submit the application and the supporting documents. An interview with the Consul is a requirement in the fulfillment of these applications. Application fee is $170.00 for all residence scheme applications.

 4. Authentication of Documents / Signature

 Authentication implies certifying a stamp, seal or signature as genuine.  The Maltese Consulate in Washington, D.C. may authenticate official stamps or seals issued by a Maltese Government Authority.  Such documents may either be sent by post or delivered by hand.  The Maltese Consulate may also authenticate a signature. In this case the individual, who must produce a valid identification card, must sign in front of the Consul. The fee for this service is $20 per document.  

 5. Legalisation/Certificate Apostille

Both Malta and the US are parties to the Hague Convention (The Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents). Applicants no longer need to get their original documents legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for documents originating in the US. An Apostille is enough to certify these documents. In the case of the United States every certificate required needs to be Apostilled by the office of the Secretary of State of the State where the documents originate from.

6. Visas

You will be requested to apply for a visa if:

·     Malta is your main destination, and you are a third-country national who is required a visa.

·     Although you wish to travel to several Schengen States, Malta is the country where you are going to spend most of your time ;

·     Malta is your first point of entry.  Please note in the event that an applicant intends to visit several Schengen states (with stays of approximately the same duration), the application must be filled at the diplomatic mission of the country of first entry.

**** Note that the Consulate in Washington, D.C. will only cater to applicants who reside in the United States with the exception of the state of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.  Residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut can send their application to our Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Applications will be submitted, duly completed and accompanied by the required documentation, to the Consulate. Following initial relevant enquiries carried out by the Consulate, applications and relative documentation, are referred to the competent authorities in Malta for processing.

7. Administration of Oaths

Maltese citizens can take Oaths at the Consulate in the presence of the Commissioner of Oaths. There is a fee of $25 for administering oaths.
